Father of War

Kanigher heard the distant dog howl for the fourth straight night.

Its lonely voice filled his mind with a restlessness that kept him awake hours after the other prisoners fell asleep. In the gloom of the bunkhouse, his heart raced, and his head throbbed. Sweat coated him. It soaked through his coarse uniform and into his cot’s thin mattress. He had been on the brink of dozing off when the howling stopped. Now the quiet gathered around him, an almost tangible presence held at arm’s length only by the sleep sounds of the other prisoners.

Kanigher waited. No more howling came. Its absence troubled him.

Since the first night, he’d heard the dog crying in the dark, its howls had lasted as long as the moon hung in the sky. The lunar glow still fell through the barred, slit windows high on the bunk room’s walls, but the animal remained silent.
